Well Water vs. City Water in the Lowcountry: What You Need to Know

By David Johnston·March 17, 2026·7 min read

Whether you're on city water or a private well, living in the Lowcountry means your water faces unique challenges. But the problems — and solutions — are very different depending on your source.

Here's a straightforward breakdown of what we see in homes across Beaufort, Bluffton, Hilton Head, and Charleston.

City Water: What Your Municipality Adds (and Leaves Behind)

City water goes through a treatment plant before it reaches your home. That's good — it kills bacteria and makes the water safe to drink. But the treatment process itself introduces chemicals that stay in your water:

  • Chlorine/Chloramines: The #1 complaint we hear. Affects taste, dries skin and hair, and creates chemical byproducts.
  • Moderate Hardness: Typically 3-7 grains per gallon. Not extreme, but enough to notice on dishes and fixtures.
  • VOCs & THMs: Chemical contaminants and chlorination byproducts that a standard filter won't catch.

Best solution: A whole-home activated carbon (charcoal) filtration system. It removes chlorine, VOCs, and chemical contaminants from every faucet in your house. At moderate hardness levels, many families don't need a separate softener — but we'll test and tell you honestly.

Well Water: Nature's Own Challenges

Well water skips the treatment plant entirely — which means no chlorine, but also no protection from naturally occurring contaminants:

  • Iron & Manganese: Causes orange/brown staining, metallic taste, and discolored laundry. Very common in coastal wells.
  • Hydrogen Sulfide: That rotten egg smell. It's not dangerous in small amounts, but it makes your water unpleasant.
  • Bacteria: Without municipal treatment, wells are vulnerable — especially after storms or flooding.
  • High Hardness: Often 10+ grains per gallon. This absolutely needs a real water softener.

Best solution: Usually a combination system — iron/sulfur removal, water softener, and UV or chemical disinfection for bacteria. Every well is different, which is why testing is critical.
